Why do You Need Childbirth Education Classes? by Gail Wooster

I decided to write this blog on Childbirth Education classes not only because I’m teaching them, but because I really believe that a couple that is educated about what is happening to them will be empowered and less-stressed about what is going to happen. A less-stressed mom will have a less-stressed birth and will give birth to a less-stressed baby and will love a less-stressed daddy. It’s a win-win situation for everyone involved.

Some of the things you need to look for in a childbirth class is education of the female anatomy, labor progression, comfort measures available, c-section description, post-partum info, and breastfeeding basics. Classes can be between 3 and 20 hours long, depending on which one you take. It will be a lot of information but this will help you prepare for your birth in all circumstances.

You’ll want to create a plan for your ideal birth after learning about your options. We know babies don’t always arrive the way we plan for them to, so you’ll also need to have a plan B and possibly a plan C. However, being informed will give you the knowledge about each scenario so that you know what is going to happen. Fear of the unknown will cause tension and stress that could spiral into birth complications.

Partners, you have a big job as well and the birthing mom will need you more than you think. Your attitude will make a huge difference. Being positive, encouraging, and upbeat about the birth will keep her calm and confident. This is a hard job and you need to think about having someone there with you to do the same thing, give you confidence. That can be a doula, her mom, your mom, or a trusted friend you both agree on. This person should back you up for when you need breaks, help sort through the medical info you get, give physical support to the mom and give you a hug when you need it. It’s a hard job seeing a person you love in pain and you will definitely need some emotional support as well. Attending childbirth classes will help prepare you for this big job.

Your birth can be a beautiful and calm experience. You should not be afraid. Fear can be kept at bay by having an encouraging and supportive birth team, positive affirmations that you have written out, and feeling confident of what your body can do. You are capable of so much more than you think. Now sign up for childbirth classes and have an amazing birth!
